Going through a divorce can be a difficult time for anyone. Whether you filed, or were handed divorce papers, there are a lot of emotions involved when it comes to a separation. Our guide is here to give you some crucial tips while you’re going through a divorce. To find out more about coping during this time, keep on reading.

Our Tips For Coping With Divorce

There’s no straightforward way to cope with a divorce, and every situation is different, leaving you with different challenges to face. Our brief guide to coping with a divorce outlines some of the key things to consider during such a turbulent time.

Address Your Feelings

It’s important to be honest with yourself during a time like this and acknowledge what you’re feeling. You may be feeling a range of emotions on a daily basis, such as sadness, anger or confusion. You may feel anxious about your future and the unknown, but it’s important to remember that these feelings will not last forever. Addressing your feelings may help you to work through them, rather than bottling them up.

Take Care Of Yourself

Taking care of yourself during an emotionally challenging time can be easier said than done, but it’s important to keep yourself physically and mentally healthy. Exercising, eating the right amount and getting enough sleep are all extremely important during challenging times. It can be easy to succumb to alcohol, drugs and other coping mechanisms, but these methods will only end up leaving you feeling worse in the long run.

Don’t Put Pressure On Yourself

It’s important to recognise that divorce is an emotionally distressing and potentially traumatic event. You may be feeling low or in a slump, and that’s okay. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to suddenly be okay. Events like divorce or separation can take time to process and heal from. Don’t rush yourself to feel better, and avoid putting pressure on yourself.

Stick To Your Routine

It may sound simple, but sticking to your routine can be useful during an emotionally challenging time. Maintaining a regular morning routine, dinner time and bedtime will help you manage your stress more effectively. Divorce can make you feel like your life is being turned upside down, but sticking to healthy routines and habits can help you maintain normalcy in your life, even when you’re feeling stressed.

Don’t Tackle Things Alone

The loss of a relationship can be a difficult thing to process, and it can leave you feeling lonely. It’s crucial that you don’t isolate yourself further and go through these times alone. Whether you reach out to family or friends, having someone to talk to can really improve how you’re feeling. Socialising can be a useful way to cope with your divorce, so don’t be afraid to reach out to our loved ones.

A news items appears in the Daily Telegraph whereby a widower who has been given a life interest in the family home by his Deceased Wife is challenging the limited benefits of that bequest on the basis that he was married to his Wife for a number of years. To the shock and horror of his family he has made a claim for family provision to seek a capital sum from his Wife’s Estate. This is a timely reminder that your last will and testament is definitely not necessarily the case. You need to make provision in your will for those that should be reasonably within your consideration at the time of your death. To effectively deny your surviving spouse gives rise to a claim for at least 50% of the Deceased’s Estate. We are not sure why the family are horrified that their father would make such a claim.

We read with some amusement the recommendation of Martin Lewis to say that a very simple way of mitigating Inheritance Tax is to get married! We are not sure that that dramatic step is the better way of mitigating Inheritance Tax. Our Divorce Department would suggest that it can create as much problems as it solves. The adviser goes on to say that once you have married you can give as much money away as you want without giving rise to a liability for Inheritance Tax. That again is wrong. If you do require advice as to mitigating Inheritance Tax, please contact Mrs. Cotton in our Private Client Department on 01803 299131.
